Creating healthier and happier schools

A school teacher and a Let's Go Zero Climate Action Advisor are stood on the school's roof admiring the new solar panels that have been installed.

Let’s Go Zero’s Climate Action Advisors give free and tailored advice to schools in England, helping them enjoy greener buildings, transport, menus and more.

What is a Climate Action Advisor?

Climate Action Advisors are experts who offer free support for schools, colleges, and nurseries in every region of England. We support schools to understand their carbon emissions, create effective climate action plans and access relevant resources and funding opportunities. We work with schools of any size, even those that are just starting their sustainability journey. We also spotlight local opportunities for how schools can work together.

Our team can help your school:

  • Seize the quick wins that reduce energy use and wider carbon impact.
  • Upgrade existing school buildings – advisors will help you explore different options and understand routes to funding.
  • Boost strategic sustainability across multi-academy trusts.
  • Connect with relevant local and national organisations to get even more support.
  • Work with other local schools to share ideas on sustainability.
  • Build an effective climate action plan that meets the Department for Education’s expectations for all education settings.

How we offer support

  • In-person school visits – we spend time with staff and explore your buildings and operations in depth to develop a climate action plan that is tailored, practical and supported across the whole school community.
  • 1:1 expert support – ongoing advice and guidance through phone calls and online meetings.
  • Staff CPD and training – helping build confidence and understanding around climate action and sustainability.
  • Student engagement sessions – interactive workshops with eco groups, school councils and pupils.
  • Regular check-ins – supporting schools to review progress, overcome barriers and keep momentum going.
  • Networks and events – connecting schools with regional opportunities, webinars and peer learning.

Energy

With building upgrades, and modern technologies like solar panels, schools can lower fuel bills and create a more resilient environment for staff and students.

Lets-Go-Zero-waste-icon

Waste

Whether they’re saving water, food, energy or office supplies, schools lower emissions and costs by cutting waste. Teachers and students can get involved too.

Adaptation and resilience

Climate change means floods and heatwaves are a growing risk. We help schools take practical steps that protect people’s health, and make schools more comfortable place to work and learn.

Curriculum

With free resources from across our Let’s Go Zero coalition, we help teachers deliver engaging lessons on climate change, nature and the environment.

Lets-Go-Zero-jobs-skills-icon

Green skills and careers

A growing number of jobs are linked to sustainability and climate action. We support schools to help young people explore these careers, and develop the skills to succeed in a changing economy.

Lets-Go-Zero-food-icon

Food

Food is a big source of school carbon emissions. We help schools and their suppliers provide meals that are delicious, popular and climate-friendly.

Lets-Go-Zero-procurement-icon

Procurement

Purchasing goods and services also drives up emissions – but tracking the impact of this, and taking action, is particularly tough. We help schools put sustainability at the heart of their buying processes.

Lets-Go-Zero-water-icon

Water

Saving water lowers bills and benefits the environment. We support a wide range of actions – from behaviour change campaigns to rainwater harvesting.

Lets-Go-Zero-transport-icon

Transport

Walking, scooting and cycling cuts air pollution and helps people stay healthy. We support schools to promote green journeys – it’s a great way to engage staff, parents and pupils.

Culture

When schools and communities unite around climate action, it’s much easier to create impact. Embracing sustainability is a winner with parents and young people – so we help schools make it a core part of their identity.

Nature

Greening schools protects them from floods and heatwaves, creates learning opportunities, and boosts staff and student health. We support fun, engaging nature projects – from vegetable gardens to bug hotels.
