Connect with nature
Through our Blindfold Safari Climate Action Countdown challenge, you can explore a space and collect words using your sense of touch.
Us humans rely on our eyes a lot: looking is the first thing most of us do when we arrive at a new place. Essentially, we are looking for dangers and opportunities to help us survive and thrive.
If you take away your sight then you have to use other senses which means you experience a space very differently, however familiar it may be.
This Blindfold Safari can be done as a trust exercise, an exploration or to create a word bank.
You will need:
- One other person (a friend, parent or carer)
- A blindfold
- A pen and paper and a clipboard or something to lean on
- A safe outdoor space
Instructions:
Give the pen and paper to your partner.
Put your blindfold on and make sure you can’t see – no peeping!
Your partner should carefully guide you around the space, safely. You should try to feel different objects, different textures and maybe temperatures, reaching up high and bending down low, with your partner keeping you safe.
Describe each different thing you feel and ask your companion to write it down. It can be just one or two words. Don’t think too carefully, just say the first words that comes into your head, there are no wrong answers.
You’ll end up with a brilliant nature-inspired list.
You can now use the words you’ve collected creatively. You could try writing a postcard to the future, write a poem, use them to spark a short story about the planet, or incorporate them in a painting or collage.
