Organisations that can help you take action

There are lots of organisations that can help you take action over your school waste. Take a look at the help available and discover what other schools are doing.

WRAP is a climate action NGO working in 40 countries to give the planet a sustainable future. Engaging citizens, governments and businesses, our mission is to end waste in food, textiles and plastics and promote the circular economy. We run campaigns such as Recycle Now and Love Food Hate Waste to help make recycling the norm and keep food out of the bin, with The Action Pack programme for schools.

WRAP also runs the Guardians of Grub campaign which aims to reduce the 1.1 million tonnes of food thrown away by the Hospitality and Food Service industry every year.

Pupils Profit school-based ECO Refill Shops empower children with the skills and tools to actively reduce plastic waste at school.  Children from KS2 upwards build workplace skills whilst participating in a fully circular business model that refills hand wash, body wash, washing-up liquid and laundry liquid for the wider school community every month.  Impact can be measured in bottles saved from waste, children’s skills progression and community behaviour change.  If you or your Local Authority would be interested in setting up a pilot or finding out more, please email info@pupilsprofit.com.

Regions they work in: Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, England

SwopItUp is an organisation that works with secondary schools and universities to educate students about the environmental and social issues linked to fast fashion. They help schools run student-led Clothes Swops and universities encourage students to take action and give them access to preloved clothes as an alternative to fast fashion. This can be done as an approved DofE volunteering activity. The Swops are free and are run on a token-based system to encourage accessibility. SwopItUp provides the resources and structure to run a Swop, including information, posters and tokens and educational presentations. As they receive grants and fundraising activities, they don’t charge a fee.

A Good Thing CIC, matchmake schools and businesses who care with amazing local charities. They make it easy for schools and businesses to donate unwanted items to local charities via a free to use app. Sending less to landfill and more to a good cause.

The idea is simple. A school has something to spare… Anything from a used laptop, furniture, a theatre set that’s no longer needed or equipment that is no longer used. A local charity has a need… They have the ideas and dedication but need the resources to make it happen. They make the match!
