It’s lights, camera, action in the hunt for school sustainability blockbusters

The IKEA X Let’s Go Zero school competition is back for the third year running!

This year, the prize is one of three sustainability kit bundles – a swap shop, a sustainability hub, or an outdoor learning area.

To be in with a chance of winning, schools have to upload a short video (no more than one min 30 secs) with pupils and teachers telling judges why their school should win the competition, the work they’ve already done in sustainability, a little about the students who will use the space, and how the prize will change the school and community if they win.

The competition opened on the 8 January and closes 19 February 2024.

The IKEA and Let’s Go Zero competition is designed to share the message about schools needing to be more sustainable – whether reducing emissions or increasing biodiversity. It’s part of a wider drive to unite communities in doing their bit to fight climate change. Let’s Go Zero is the campaign uniting all 32,000 UK schools to become zero carbon by 2030.

Four schools from across the UK will receive one of the IKEA sustainability product sets up to the value of £1,500 for their project.

Any school, college and nursery across the UK can apply and applications must involve students aged 18 and under.

Take a look at some of our previous winners.

Alex Green, Schools Lead at Let’s Go Zero, says: “This project will bring inspiring ideas and spaces to life to help young people learn about our environment and develop sustainable behaviours. I’m really looking forward to seeing this year’s IKEA x Let’s Go Zero competition winners and the impact their projects will have bringing climate action into their schools.”

Alison Lasenby, Let’s Go Zero Programme Officer, who oversees the competition, said:

“These fantastic prizes will help schools to be more sustainable – whether that’s through re-using uniforms or enabling outdoor learning. The kits aim to make taking action practical and easy, and encourage positive behaviour change amongst students, staff and the wider community.

“We are excited to see the sustainability work schools are already doing and can’t wait for the competition to kick off!”

With 42% of all UK households home to school-aged children, the classroom is a natural place to inspire change across communities for the next generation.

Both schools and children play a critical role in helping the UK cut carbon emissions, building on the existing energy and passion of the next generation to be more climate conscious and make beneficial changes. The IKEA x Let’s Go Zero Competition allows schools to lead by example and inspire others to be a part of the UK’s zero carbon transformation.
